There is a great deal more to our Jewish student service than providing social amenities and accommodation. Our long experience has shown us that the transition from home to student life can be more daunting for some than others. To help smooth out the difficulties often experienced, we have put together a programme of support initiatives.
Financial Need
Even before starting at College or University, the cost factors may be an obstacle to applying for a course. UJS Hillel can help students in genuine financial need in a number of ways. There is a special fund available which may be able to help subsidise living expenses, eg rent, operated in the strictest confidence.
Drugs
It is a fact of student life that drugs are widely available in University and campus areas, especially the social settings such as pubs and clubs. It is UJS Hillel policy that all proscribed drugs as defined by the 1971 Misuse of Drugs Act are totally prohibited within our Houses and student centres. Most colleges and Universities have counsellors to help with drug related problems and Jewish students who need support should contact Drugsline – helpline 08081 606 606 www.drugsline.org. There is also an informative website dealing with drug and illegal substance issues - www.talktofrank.co.uk . The talktofrank helpline number is 0800 776600.
Alcohol
Social drinking is very much part of the student scene and alcohol is available at low prices in most student unions. However, in excess – and binge-drinking is a growing phenomenon - it can lead to anti-social and disruptive behaviour and cause serious damage to your health. In addition to your campus counsellor, there are a number of organisations available to help if alcohol dependence becomes a problem such as ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS - www.alcoholics-anonymous.org.uk. Another helpful source of support is Drinkline - 0800 917 8282.
