UJS Hillel have recently welcomed Jewish students, their families, former residents and local supporters to celebrate the official opening of their state of the art new student centre in Leeds. Nearly 100 people toured the Centre (formerly the iconic Hillel House).
Daniel Marcus, Chief Executive of UJS Hillel, described the completion of the £450,000 refurbishment program as a “milestone in the development of Hillel in the UK and a standard bearer for all future projects. A vote of thanks is due to the Leeds Hillel leadership who have enabled over 1000 students in Leeds to have the opportunity to enjoy this outstanding centre and engage in meaningful Jewish experiences. This centre is an incredible gift and belongs to the students.”
Leeds Hillel has provided a focal point for Jewish campus life since its establishment in 1958. The new centre is home to “Springfield’s Café” serving an array of delicious meals throughout the day – from breakfast to dinner. Students can meet their friends for a game of pool in the multi plasma screened lounge, study in the refurbished Library, daven in the Kotel themed beit midrash, exercise in the fully equipped gym, practice yoga in the dance studio and participate in a wide range of social, cultural and educational events run by the Jewish society (JSoc). Modern office facilities for the JSoc and Student Chaplain are also provided in the centre.
Hillel’s newest initiative called “J-Shop” was also launched at the communal opening. The J-Shop provides a mix of kosher Israeli favourites and staples at an affordable price to Jewish student’s right on their doorstep. The shop has already proven an exciting addition to student life and will be replicated in Hillel centres across the country.
Following the official opening the Leeds JSoc held their own celebrations and scored another first for Leeds by holding the inaugural Jewish fraternity party. Over two hundred students joined in the celebrations, proving that the new centre is a go to place for Jewish student life in Leeds. Leeds Jsoc President Dan Grabiner said “the new centre has attracted so many students that had not previously attended Jsoc programmes or would have set foot in Hillel. That is a really exciting plus for Jsoc leadership.”
